A commemorative medal, marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of Yeshivath Mercaz HaRav, has been issued by the Israel Government Coins and Medals Corporation LTD. The medal, the first with a lithography in color, honors the memory of the founder of the Yeshivah, HaRav Avraham Yitzhak HaCohen Kook.
In producing the medal particular emphasis was placed upon the manner in which the image of HaRav Kook was formed, in order to comply with the special requirements of the halakhah, and to receive the sanction of the Heads of the Yeshivah.
The medal was produced through a special technological method using a photograph of HaRav Kook. The image on the face of the medal, of HaRav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen - HaRa’ayah Kook., who was the Founder and Rosh Yeshivah of “Yeshivath Mercaz HaRav”, and Chief Rabbi of Israel, is a graphic representation. There are no etchings, stamps or reliefs of the image. A picture of the Beth HaMidrash of the Yeshivah, in the Kiryat Moshe quarter of Jerusalem, appears on the back of the medal.
The inscription on the medal reads: Torath Yisrael, Am Israel, Eretz Israel. These are the basic values set forth in the teachings of HaRav Kook.
The medal is bronze and 59 millimeters diameter.
The medals are not meant for sale to the general public, but are intended to be bestowed upon donors who contribute the amount of $300 or more to be used towards grants for married students of the Yeshivah. Such a contribution will reward the donor with the medal of HaRe’iyah.
